Dr B's Story

Dr’s B’s is a restaurant run by Barnardo’s in Belfast. Young people with learning difficulties are trained for a career in the catering industry. The project has an 80% success rate in finding them employment.

"When I started I was very shy. I was in the kitchen and one day they said ‘do you want to go out front’ and that’s when I started to open up. Dr B’s has given me the confidence to go in for a catering competition and I came out with a silver medal which was the happiest day of my life. I would have been lost without it. I wouldn’t have made friends and I wouldn’t be doing much with my life – Barnardo’s has opened doors for me. Dr B’s has been the best two years of my life. Now I’m not going to let anybody hold me back".

Barnardo’s runs services across the UK to support disadvantaged families. We help parents, carers and families in the community as well as providing advice and support for children. For example we help young carers and their families find the support they are entitled to and we provide advice and emotional support.
