Barnardo’s has been running Positive Identities for three years. The service provides a youth group to LGBTQ people in Calderdale as well as support for family members who may be struggling with their child’s sexuality or gender identity. We provide workshops for voluntary and community groups, to make sure that anyone working with young LGBTQ people is knowledgeable and aware of potential issues. Training is also offered to staff and students in schools as well as at local authorities. There’s a successful initiative, BEAMS (Barnardo’s Equality Ambassadors) which is running in schools and for the local authorities apprentices. This allows Barnardo’s to ensure our training has more longevity and that LGBTQ awareness and equality is embedded in the culture.
There is also a second project in Calderdale, Healthy Identities, which works to support LGBTQ young people to access healthcare. It also offers training to all healthcare staff in the area, including GPs, A&E staff and those working in mental health services.
Barnardo's work with children and young people who have mental health difficulties. We run centres where they can come and we ensure they have a worker to talk to. We help them build their confidence and address the root of their difficulties. We also work with parents and other professionals.Find out more about how we provide advice and emotional support.
