Sam's Story

I was in foster care, then a big children’s home. Then I moved in my with dad but it wasn’t a safe place and bad things happened. So I ended up living in a tent. I cared for no one, and no one cared for me. I had no prospects, no aspiration. I had nothing. I felt empty inside.

When I thought things couldn’t get any worse my tent broke. But that’s when Barnardo’s found me. Suddenly I had a nice warm bed and food to eat. I felt warm inside and realised that at last someone cared for me. I’d never had that feeling before.

Barnardo’s helped me into an apprenticeship and at the age of 19 I’m on my way to achieving an ambition to be a mechanic. Who knows how far I can go in the future and it’s all thanks to Barnardo’s believing in me.

Barnardo's leaving care services aim to bridge the gap for children in care between leaving care and living in the adult world. We help young people to develop the life skills they will need to look after themselves and we also continue to provide support when they leave secure accommodation.
